Science - What are materials?

Image
Today we began our new unit on Materials, learning about different types of materials and Mrs Loizos was really impressed with how many material types the children could name; wood, metal, fabric, brick, pottery, glass, plastic, cardboard and paper. We then explored the word 'Property' and realised we already had hear this word, thinking about what 'Lost Property' means, and that if something is 'your property' then it belongs to you. We learned that when we talk a 'property of a material' it means the way a material behaves.  We looked at five different properties - opaque, transparent, flexible, waterproof and absorbent. We then discussed three different objects:  - cardboard shoes - glass hammer - chocolate teapot The children discussed why these materials wouldn't work for the purpose, and which materials would be better. Mrs Loizos even put on some carboard shoes and we tested it in the water and rain outside - unsurprisingly, she ended up with

Computing - I can predict the outcome of a sequence involving forwards and backwards commands

Image
Today in computing we used the beebots and practised moving them forwards and backwards. We used mats and programmed the beebots to move forwards and backwards along them. We then looked at some sequences and had to predict where we thought the beebot would be at the end of the sequence. We then programmed the beebots to see if we were right.

Today, Castlehaven class were visited by the author and illustrator, Simon Murray. Simon talked to us about being an author and how he develops his ideas and gets plots for his stories.  He then did a drawing workshop with us. We were drawing the main monster character from one of his books ‘Icky Doo Dah’. Have a look at some of our fantastic drawings and how we progressed through the drawing as a class together.
