Big Phonics - Alphabetical order and dictionaries

Image
This week we have been looking at the alphabet and practising the order of the letters. We have practised writing the letters in capitals and lower case. Today we ended the week by playing a few games with dictionaries. We found some words and worked out their meanings.

Art - To practise modelling techniques using playdoh.

Today we continued to look at the art work of Matt Buckley. We will be designing our own animals to make out of clay in a few weeks. Today we looked at different clay skills. Using playdoh we practised these different skills: rolling a ball, pulling and pinching the clay, rolling snakes, creating holes, smoothing the clay, adding pieces, squeezing the clay and scratching details with tools. We all did really well practising these different skills and this will help us when we come to make our sculptures in a few weeks time.

Maths - I can describe the position of left and right.

Today we were looking at left and right in maths. We played some games to practise finding our left and right hands. We made up routines to hold up our left and right arms. We then looked at patterns and worked out the position of different shapes using the words ‘left’ and ‘right’ to describe where they are.

DT - I can design a free standing den.

Today we chose our groups that we would like to work in to make our dens. We spoke about the equipment we have to use. We then worked in our groups to discuss what the dens should look like. W were told they have to have a roof and be free-standing.  The children worked well in their groups and listened to each other’s ideas. They then drew their designs and tried to make sure they all looked the same.

DT - To draw a picture of a house with the key features.

Today in DT we continued to discuss the different types of houses and the types of houses we live in. We described what our house looks like to our friends - thinking about the colour and what they were made out of.  We then thought about how to draw our houses and spoke about the word ‘proportion’. We thought about how big the door, roof and windows should be on our drawings. We then drew our houses, with a sense of proportion and then labelled the main features.
