English Hook - The Smeds and the Smoos

This term we are starting a new text in English - ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’. 

As our hook into the topic we thought about aliens. We watched a science video explaining that at the moment no one has found evidence of any living things on other planets. We spoke about what we thought aliens might look like if they existed. 

The children were very creative and had a go at making their aliens. Some looked friendly and cute whilst others looked fierce and frightening! Have a look at our aliens below.

We’ve then thought about the United Kingdom and what four countries makeup the UK. You might like to test your child at home. Today we tried to make the UK out of playdoh, which was quite tricky, but we did really well.

Animal discovery

 Today we discovered a trapped animal in the school grounds. Year 1 were very eager to help the injured wild mammal, but had to be warned about keeping at a safe distance. We talked about who we should call in an animal emergency and the national charity: the RSPCA. We then acted out our great discovery in little groups and contacting the RSPCA to help. This is linked to our learning in English where a boy finds a whale in the story ‘The Storm Whale’.
